Last night, April 23rd, the crews of six boats and two dedicated patrons of rowing were inducted into the National Rowing Hall of Fame at a ceremony held in Sarasota-Bradenton, Florida. Included in the Class of 2016, was the 1976 Olympic Silver Medal, Coxless Pair, consisting of Calvin Coffey and Michael Staines. Cut from the U.S. team, the pair regrouped and won the U.S. Olympic Trials, then went on to Montreal to win the silver medal.
I had both the pleasure and honor of coxing Mike's boat as an undergraduate at Cornell. Mike's dedication, drive, determination and and overall demeanor epitomized what makes the sport great. He was, and still is, a class act. Mike, my heartfelt congratulations to you on your induction into the National Rowing Hall of Fame. Go Big Red! BMA!
